Finding a Reliable Wood Flooring Manufacturer in the Greater Spokane Area

wood flooring manufacturer spokaneWhether you’re a homeowner or commercial contractor in need of wood flooring for home or business, you want to find a wood flooring manufacturer in the Spokane area who offers high quality wood and service. Locating the right flooring mill for your needs can be tricky, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the industry. The following tips can help ensure you find the best manufacturer to meet your needs.

Ask for Recommendations

The best way to find a high-quality wood flooring manufacturer is to ask people you know for guidance. As a home or business owner, speak with family, friends, colleagues and neighbors about their past flooring projects. It’s likely someone you know will be able to provide insight or refer you to a reliable flooring mill.

Research the Options

While recommendations from people you know are ideal, research manufacturers online too. Google the business but don’t just rely on their website for reviews; these will almost always be positive. Look for reviews from other online sources.

Ask for References

Obtaining feedback from previous clients can be really helpful, so consider asking the company for a list of references.

Fight Allergies with Hardwood Flooring in Spokane

Hardwood Floors in SpokaneAllergy season can leave you seeking relief from itchy eyes, sneezing, and a sore throat. Installing hardwood flooring in Spokane homes can help fight common allergens during the spring and year-round. Learn how hardwood floors, such as those made from Tamarack (Larch), can make all the difference for seasonal allergy sufferers.

Reduce the Places That Allergens Can Settle

Carpets and rugs offer lots of places for allergens like dust, dander, mites, and pollen to settle into. Even with vacuuming, the twisty fibers of carpets conceal unwanted allergens. Hardwood floors offer a much smoother surface that doesn’t give foreign substances as many places to hide.

Enjoy More Effective Cleaning

Regular housekeeping can help keep allergy symptoms at bay by removing the source of the irritation. All that’s needed to keep hardwood flooring in Spokane clean is sweeping and mopping. Regular birch wood floor cleaning reduces the quantity of allergens found in the home in general, too.

Minimize the Chances of Mold Growth

Mold is a common allergen in homes, and it can grow anywhere. Hardwood floors like fir don’t provide the favorable conditions that mold needs to thrive. Making your home a less livable place for mold can alleviate some common complaints, like runny noses and sore throats.

Hardwood Floor Acclimation in Wenatchee

hardwood floor acclimation wenatcheeYour wood flooring should be acclimated to your region’s general climate. Not doing so may lead to premature damage. Learn the basics of hardwood floor acclimation and why it matters, especially if you live in an area prone to rapid temperature fluctuations.

Why Hardwood Floor Acclimation Is Important in Wenatchee

Depending on the air in your home, the hardwood floor may be losing or gaining moisture. This can lead to the planks warping, cupping or swelling, which is why acclimation is so important when installing wood floors. The acclimation process generally takes about three days from the completion of installation.

How to Check the Floors for Acclimation

Once the installation is finished, have the contractor check the floor’s moisture content. You can also check this yourself using a moisture meter, available at your local hardware store. The ideal moisture variations depend on the floor’s dimensions and cut-style. As a rule of thumb, the moisture difference between the floor and subfloor should be less than 2% for planks wider than 3-inches. It should be less than 4% for planks less than 3-inches in width.

Pre-Installation Acclimation

If the contractor stores the floor panels on site overnight, be sure they’re stored indoors. Ask the contractor to move them inside the home and not in the yard or patio. Keep the temperature in your home within normal living conditions.

It’s also best to keep the panels inside their boxes until the contractor is ready to install them. Keep both ends of the boxes opened for ample air circulation. This applies for all flooring styles, including the common fir and birch, as well as solid wood and laminated floors.

We Provide Various Flooring Styles

All wood floor panels should be properly acclimated prior to and after installation. Contact the flooring pros at Smiley Wood Flooring for more informaton about acclimation and with all your hardwood flooring questions.

Should You Refinish or Replace Your Hardwood Floor in Missoula?

refinish or replace hardwood floors missoulaAs with any other component in the home, your floors will at some point require your undivided attention. If you have wood floors, this begs the question: Should you refinish or replace hardwood floors? We’ll explain how to determine the best course of action from a cost and longevity standpoint.

The Cost Factor

Refinishing will almost always be cheaper than fully replacing floors. There are more costs associated with replacement. Aside from the new wood panels, there are also the labor costs from removing and disposing of the existing floor.

When Replacement is Necessary

Though refinishing floors is more cost-friendly in most instances, it’s not always doable. What factors determine when replacement is necessary?

  • Severe damage – As a general rule, floors are considered severely damaged when 30% or more of the surface shows visible signs of chipping, warping, or cupping.
  • Movement – if you feel wiggling when you step over the boards, there are major gaps between panels. Refinishing won’t secure the panels in place.
  • Frame damage – a carpenter will need to remove the panels and examine the floor’s frame for structural damage. If there are signs of underfloor damage, floor replacement is necessary.

Other Reasons to Replace Your Wood Floors

You may elect to replace the floor because you want a major aesthetic change. Perhaps you prefer the grain texture of birch or fir over your current floor. Maybe you want a different cut-style or like the look of wide-plank panels. The latter is a big trend at the moment.

Determine When to Refinish or Replace Hardwood Floors

If you decide replacement is the better option for your Missoula home, contact Smiley Wood Flooring. We provide various floor types that suit different architectural styles. When it’s time to refinish or replace hardwood floors, know what options are available. Contact us today for a consultation.
